Onions like cool weather in the early part of their growth, so plant them in spring - except in mild-winter areas, where onions are grown as a fall or winter crop. Onions are adapted to a wide range of temperatures and they are frost tolerant. Leaf, root, and bulb development occurs in cool temperatures between 13 to 23 degrees. Optimal onion leaf growth occurs at 20 to 25 degrees.
